Hand-Painted Virgin Mary Wood Plaque
This hand-painted wood plaque features a portrait of the Virgin Mary depicted with bowed head and hands folded in prayer. Painted in tones of cobalt blue, red, white, and warm brown, the design incorporates gold-tone painted accents along the halo and veil. The reverse of the panel is inscribed with the phrase "I'll pray for you", signed by the artist, dated 2024, and fitted with a metal sawtooth hanger for wall display.
Background Note
Devotional iconography painted on natural wood panels continues a long-standing tradition of Christian sacred art. Historical icon painters favored solid timber surfaces, using metallic paints or gold leaf to highlight halos and sacred figures against dark wood backgrounds. Modern folk artists continue this aesthetic, pairing traditional iconographic symbols—such as Mary's blue cloak and contemplative pose—with raw wood grain textures.
